You’ll also get some shortcuts to knowing all the chords you’ll need. Expect fiddle tunes, hymns, and Old-Time songs. - Stephen Seifert | 10-11:15am | Refine the Basic Techniques on the dulcimer of strumming and fingering as we expand our repertoire and train our ear. – Anne Lough | 2:15 – 3:30pm | Playing the Mountain Dulcimer – String Side Up – An Introduction and Review of the Basics This workshop will be taught in three phases – proper fingering and strumming, same songs with chords – then putting it all together. - Paul Andry | 3:45 – 5pm | Easy Gospel Tunes – We will be in DAD tuning, we’ll learn some lesser known old time gospel tunes (some with multiple parts). - Molly McCormack |
| Intermediate Track Same instructor same time each day Wednesday – Friday Instructors will teach different material each of the 3 days | 8:30 – 9:45am | Explore a Rich Variety of Music as we focus on chord melody playing, ear training, right hand technique and musicality. - Anne Lough | 10-11:15am | Repertoire Enhancement - brief review of fingering/chord technique, start with easy arrangements and progress to more advanced, several venues of music – from famous Mardi Gras songs, to fiddle tunes, Irish, classical, etc. - Paul Andry | 2:15 – 3:30pm | Good Old Timey Songs – We’ll be in DAD tuning, but some songs will be in other keys, so bring a capo. We’ll work on both melodies and harmonies. - Molly McCormack | 3:45 – 5pm | Chord-Melody Tunes and Techniques (DAD) Bring capo - Before I knew all the chords and what their names were, I discovered this system to put chords to any melody note. I don’t put chords to everything in my performances, but I can whenever I want to. You can, too. This method will also help with reading AND playing by ear. Expect a number of tunes and tune fragments. I’m not just going to show you how this works; I’m going to make sure YOU can do this before the end of the last class. - Stephen Seifert |

| Advanced Track Same instructor same time each day Wednesday – Friday Instructors will teach different material each of the 3 days | 8:30 – 9:45am | Paul’s Favorite Arrangements – a few finger picked songs, a song or two played in the key of “G” without a capo, hammer-ons, pull-offs, plucks, draws and harmonics. Songs from traditional, Mardi Gras, ragtime, classical Cajun, etc. - Paul Andry | 10-11:15am | Celtic Melodies – We’ll cover the gamit from jigs to airs, some fingerpicking, flatpicking and rhythmic strumming. We’ll be in DAD tuning, bring a capo. - Molly McCormack | 2:15 – 3:30pm | Advanced Fingerpicking Styles and Arrangements - Think expressive, compelling, surprising, accurate, interesting, and varied. Techniques will include basic fingerpicking, alternating bass, harp scales, and right-hand hammer/pull. We’ll not only talk about arranging using these techniques, I’ll show you how to train yourself to improvise just enough (less than you think) to keep your audience guessing. - Stephen Seifert | 3:45 – 5pm | From Beautiful Celtic Airs to Classical Tunes, we’ll enjoy honing our left and right hand techniques, playing parts and increasing our musicality. - Anne Lough |
AFTERNOON FUN "PICK N' CHOOSE" |
Wednesday, September 22, 12:45-2pm |
1. Contra Dance – Jane Ewing - American Traditional contra and square dancing is what was done by our forefathers, especially in the Appalachian Mountains. This form of communication made it possible to talk to your neighbors & friends at gatherings while the fiddlers played their tunes. The caller magically moves the dancers in a way that passes you by everyone else in the hall during an evening. | 2. Ensemble Workshop – Paul Andry - explore each of the components that comprise ensemble music including “color”, melody, harmony, chords, improvisation, rhythm, modulation, dynamics, syncopation, vocals, instrumentation, heart and soul. Then we will apply these techniques using several well known songs. Our goal is to give insight into the components of an ensemble arrangement and the tools to arrange your own music. | 3. Penny Whistle – Molly McCormack – We’ll learn the basics about playing this wonderful portable instrument. How to play a scale, how to get a clear sound and play a simple melody. Students will need a Key of D penny whistle for the class. | 4. TablEdit Part 1 - Janet Henderson – TablEdit for Strum Diddy’s Learn the basics of TablEdit; how to turn those tunes in your head into music Tabs at this two-part workshop. Demo with basic version of “Boil Those Cabbage”, practice adding chords, text, and changing the look of the Tab to make it your own. | 5. Really Great Old-Time Jam Tunes Fiddlers Take for Granted, Part I – Stephen Seifert - You might not know these, but you really should. To Old-Time fiddle and banjo players, these tunes are standard warhorses of the genre. This class and its counterpart are all about repertoire. (Take one or both.) I can’t wait to share these with you! Intermediate and Up but All Are Welcome |
Thursday, September 23, 12:45-2pm |
1. Jack Tales & Appalachian Stories – Anne Lough – Join in the adventures of Jack and enjoy the humor and imagination of the stories that have been shared around hearth fires for many centuries, first in the “old country” and then in the Southern Appalachians. | 2. Fa-so-la Part 1 - Robert Walker – Learn a uniquely American tradition of singing four-part harmony with shaped notes at our beginning Sacred Harp singing school. | 3. Trio Workshop – Jean Ann Moon – Learn to play distinctive trio arrangements that give the Mountain Dulcimers a rich full string sound by first learning the notes and timing and then concentrating on “making it musical” by listening to where your part fits with the other two parts and how your partners are playing. | 4. TablEdit Part 2 - Janet Henderson Continued from Wednesday, September 22 | 5. Really Great Old-Time Jam Tunes Fiddlers Take for Granted, Part II – Stephen Seifert - Same idea as Part I but different tunes. You don’t have to take both classes but I’d love it if you did. Intermediate and Up but All Are Welcome |
 Friday, September 24, 12:45-2pm |
1. A Folk Song History – Anne Lough – From old English ballads to lumberjack and Civil War songs, a delightful sing-along of some of the folk songs that grew out of the events and occupations of our 300 year history.
| 2. Fa-so-la Part 2 - Robert Walker Continued from Thursday, September 23 | 3. Basic Composition – Molly McCormack – This class is for those who want to compose their own melodies on the mountain dulcimer, but don’t know how to begin. We’ll go through the process of writing a melody as a class, then students will compose melodies on their own. This class is for all levels, but students should have some basic knowledge of dulcimer tablature. | 4. Where Do Chords Come From (and how can I tell which chord to play when)? – Paul Andry - Jimmy Buffett quote: “All I have to do is learn to play three chords, and I can play any song?!!!” Explore the composition of simple chords, the most common chords in our music and how to identify these chords in each key. Then, using a selection of well known songs, learn how to determine which of these chords should be played when and when to switch from one chord to the next. The class will play “rhythm” dulcimer chords to back the melody players. Finally play the same songs in different keys – with and without a capo (bring a capo if you have one). | 5. “If I Can Count Sheep, I Can Count Rhythms!” – Pat Jex – It's confusing to think of something being an eighth of a beat, and you may wonder why a note that is one beat long is called a quarter note. Why wouldn't it be called a whole note, since it's a whole beat? Pat will teach you how to have the confidence to look at a piece of tab and count the rhythms. Learning to count is the most essential tool for learning to understand rhythm. |
